In Lakes

Recovering past records using sediment cores from lakes.

Lake Christabel coring

Lake Christabel coring

Sediment cores obtained from lakes are being used to learn more about New Zealand's past climate and earthquake history. The following lake coring projects are currently under way:

  • The Lake Ohau Climate History Project aims to understand past hydrologic and climate variability from Lake Ohau by collecting and investigating shallow lake cores.
  • Lake sediments are used as Nature's seismometers to date and reconstruct the spatial extent of rupture of past Alpine Fault earthquakes.

These are collaborative projects between GNS Science and New Zealand universities.
